Women At War, A Virtual Presentation by Dr. John Davis

Soviet Women in WW II

As part of Women’s History Month, Milkweed is proud to present Dr. John Davis, Associate Professor of History at HCC, for a virtual presentation about Soviet Women in World War II.  According to Dr. Davis, “More than one million Soviet women participated as active combatants on the eastern Front in World War II.” Dr. Davis, will discuss the evolution of women in combat in Russia during the first half of the Twentieth Century, from limited involvement in the Balkan Wars and World War I, to greater involvement during the Provisional Government, and even more under the Soviets. Arguing that socialist policies afforded Russian women the training, legal authority, and confidence to assert their rights, Davis will detail the historical forces that brought women, such as the famous Marina Pavlichenko, into combat as pilots, snipers, anti-aircraft gunners, doctors, medics, and other roles in World War II.  In the face of great  resistance, Soviet women demanded to defend their Motherland.
